This element of a dog portrait is something that can be quite challenging to get right. When layering the lighter, white hairs over a darker fur they can become muddy very quickly and then tht section can end up really flat and lacking depth. To ensure this doesn't happen, I layer the pastel and use the pencils in a way that ensures the details are clear but not coarse as I don't want this to end up looking wiry.
