MILAN, Feb 16 (Reuters) - Anastasiia Metelkina and Luka Berulava made history for Georgia on Monday, winning the tiny South Caucasus country's first Winter Olympic medal by claiming silver in the pairs figure skating event of the Milano Cortina Games.

The teams of Spencer Akira Howe and Emily Chan, and Ellie Kam and Danny O’Shea, were knocked out of podium contention before the competition ended.

With the team competition starting first, the physical and emotional cost can ripple right on through into the individual ones.

One of these pairs has already made history, in that Kam and O'Shea have a nearly 14-year age difference, which makes them the team with the largest age gap for any U.S. pair to have competed at worlds since at least 1990, according to NBC News research.

The individual women’s Olympic figure skating competition begins on Tuesday, February 17, with the “Blade Angels” representing Team USA at the Milan-Cortina Games. Alysa Liu, Amber Glenn, and Isabeau Levito are representing the United States in the individual event.
