The Slam Dunk Contest has always been All-Star Weekend’s Wild Card, the event most likely to flip from forgettable to unforgettable in a single leap. Over the last decade, though, the trophy has belonged less to established stars and more to hungry role players and specialists carving out a lane above the rim.
The NBA Slam Dunk Contest is a staple of the league’s All-Star weekend. Each year the contest is held the night before the All-Star Game, giving the opportunity for basketball’s highest flyers to show off their creativity and dunking skill. Once upon a time it was the highlight of the weekend and a can’t-miss event on any sports fan’s calendar.

The NBA introduced its Three-Point Contest in 1986, when Celtics legend Larry Bird was the inaugural winner. He won the first three Three-Point Contests the league conducted until Dale Ellis of the SuperSonics became the first winner other than Bird in ’89.
